AUSTIN’S TREATY OAK PLATINUM RUM FEATURED AT RESERVE 101 COMPLIMENTARY TASTING, JULY 12
Wednesday, 06 July 2011 08:01

“Not your daddy’s whiskey bar,” Houston bar Reserve 101, located in the heart of the city’s EaDo (East Downtown) entertainment district, tips its Stetson to a Texas original, Treaty Oak Platinum Rum, with a complimentary tasting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday July 12.

The Austin distillery takes its name from the Texas capitol’s famous Treaty Oak, under whose branches Stephen F. Austin was said to have signed a peace accord with local Native Americans. The 500-year-old tree, a symbol of strength, longevity and pride, was poisoned in an act of vandalism in 1989 but miraculously survived in a pruned-back state.

“We like to feature Texas products, and Treaty Oak Platinum Rum is a standout,” says Reserve 101 co-owner and whiskey expert Mike Raymond. “The distillery is about to introduce a new gin, and we hope to have it on hand in time for the tasting along with several rum cocktails that our customers are sure to enjoy.”

Raymond said attendance at Reserve 101’s Tuesday Tastings has been near capacity of late and recommended early registration for the event at http://reserve101.com/whiskey-tastings-houston.

Treaty Oak Platinum Rum was introduced in 2007 to compete with other rums and with vodkas. It’s hand-crafted using only Texas ingredients. The distillery is the only one in the state that both brews and distills its own spirits.

“Austin has made a name for itself in recent years as a Southwest distilling Mecca, with several vodkas. Treaty Oak Platinum Rum is an outstanding addition to this lineup of home-state-produced spirits,” Raymond said.

Reserve 101 is a neighborhood bar located at the corner of Caroline and Dallas next to Dirt Bar and across from House of Blues. In addition to its superb whiskey collection, the neighborhood bar is also famous for its Signature Cocktails and infusions, organic material steeped in liquor to impart distinctive flavorings.

“Happy Hour,” with dollar-off beers and wines and half-price signature cocktails runs from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday with specials just about every day of the week, including Sundays.
