First whiskey made in Japan
Downtown whiskey bar Reserve 101 will hold a complimentary tasting of Japan’s first whiskey, Suntory Yamazaki 12- and 18-year-old single malt, on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 6:30 p.m. Space is limited; register in advance at: http://reserve101.com/whiskey-tastings-houston.
Yamazaki is produced at Japan’s oldest whiskey distillery, located in the Vale of Yamazaki near the ancient capital of Kyoto. The distillery was built in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii, the founder of Suntory International Corp. and the father of Japanese whisky. Using copper pot stills, the Yamazaki distillery was the first of its kind outside of Scotland. The most popular single malt in Japan, Yamazaki was introduced into the United States in 2004. The following year, its 18-year-old single malt won a double-gold medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
“Yamazaki is an exceptional single malt whiskey aged in barrels made of American, Spanish and Japanese oak,” said Reserve 101 co-owner and whiskey expert Mike Raymond. “Our selection of over 200 premium whiskeys wouldn’t be complete without this world-class spirit.”
The 12-year-old Yamazaki is medium-bodied with aromas of dried fruit and honey. It has a delicate, mellow flavor and a woody finish. Yamazaki 18 is full-bodied with spicy, cherry notes, toffee-like aromas and a long, dry finish.
Reserve 101—“not your daddy’s whiskey bar”—is located at the corner of Caroline and Dallas, next to Dirt Bar and across from House of Blues. The bar has the finest whiskey selection in the nation, with 200 varieties of popular and small-batch, hard-to-find whiskeys from around the world. Reserve 101 is in the process of expanding its whiskey portfolio to 300 brands and plans to offer evening food service later this fall. The neighborhood establishment is also famous for its Signature Cocktails and infusions, organic material steeped in liquor to impart distinctive flavorings.
“Happy Hour,” with dollar-off beers and wines and half-price signature cocktails runs from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday with specials just about every day of the week, including Sundays.
