Downtown whiskey bar Reserve 101 will hold a complimentary tasting of Laphroaig 10-, 18-year-old and Quarter Cask single malts on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 6:30 p.m. Register to attend this special event at: http://reserve101.com/whiskey-tastings-houston.
“To single malt fans, Laphroaig is synonymous with ‘peaty’ Islay Scotch whiskey, due to the smoky, earthy flavors imparted when the distillery’s malted barley is dried over peat-fueled fires,” said Reserve 101 co-owner and whiskey expert Mike Raymond.
Laphroaig 10-year-old Single Malt has a strong smoky, seaweedy, medicinal nose with a touch of sweetness. It is surprisingly sweet on the palate, with hints of salt, layers of peatiness and a lingering finish. This whiskey captured a Double Gold medal at this year’s San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
The 18-year-old Laphroaig has a sweet, spicy, fruity nose and a warm, smoky, floral, toffee-like, nutty-sweet taste with a trace of new-mown hay and peat at the finish.
Laphroaig Quarter Cask was inspired by the small casks often used for Scotch whiskey in the 19th Century when it was transported by packhorse. These quarter-cask barrels were revived by Laphroaig because they provide the whiskey up to 30 percent greater contact with the wood, intensifying the maturation process. Bottled at a higher alcohol strength, the smaller casks produce a soft sweetness and velvety feel at the start, followed by Laphroaig’s characteristic, strong peaty flavor and a very long finish.
