SPRINGBANK SINGLE MALTS FROM “THE WHISKEY CAPITAL OF THE WORLD” -- May 17th Tasting
Wednesday, 11 May 2011 07:48

HOUSTON, May 11, 2011— Houston single malt Scotch afficianados can sample handcrafted whiskeys from the historic Springbank Distillery of Campbeltown, Scotland, on Tuesday May 17 at 6 p.m. at downtown Houston bar Reserve 101.

The complimentary tasting will feature three unique offerings from the Springbank distillery: Longrow 14-year-old single malt, which has a smoky, peaty taste similar to Islay Scotch; Springbank 12-year Cream Sherry Single Cask Single Malt; and Springbank CV, which is aged in bourbon, sherry and port casks.

The town once sported 34 distilleries and billed itself as “the whiskey capital of the world.” Today, only three whiskey makers call Campbeltown home. Springbank is the oldest independent family-owned distillery in Scotland. Founded in 1828 on the site of an illicit still operated by Archibald Mitchell, the distillery is now owned by his great-great-great grandson Hedley G. Wright. It is the only distillery in Scotland that conducts all operations—from floor malting and maturation to bottling—onsite.

“These are three great handcrafted whiskeys from a distillery that still employs old-style techniques,” said Reserve 101 co-owner and whiskey expert Mike Raymond. “The small village of Campbeltown lost most of its distilleries to Prohibition, but Springbank is still going strong after 183 years.”

To register for the complimentary tasting, visit the Reserve 101 web site at: http://reserve101.com/whiskey-tastings-houston.

Reserve 101, “not your daddy’s whiskey bar,” stocks over 170 varieties of premium whiskeys, plus other liquors, beer and wine. The bar, located on the corner of Caroline and Dallas downtown across from House of Blues, also offers Martinis, Signature Cocktails and its own special infusions—organic materials such as apples, peaches, cinnamon and pecans, and chili peppers—steeped in liquor to impart unique flavors. “Happy Hour,” with dollar-off beers and wines and half-price Signature Cocktails runs from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday with specials just about every day of the week, including Sundays.
